First Drive: Volvo S90 T5

Volvo’s new S90 T5 turned heads on the road when it first launched in Malaysia. Sporting a streamlined design and fantastic technological advancements, it’s no surprise that this luxury sedan is becoming a fast favourite amongst motorheads.

Sleek looks aside, the S90 T5 is a beast on the road. Pop the hood open and you’ll discover the powerful 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder Drive-E engine that enables 254 hp and 350 Nm of torque. The S90 T5 goes from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 6.8 seconds and has a top speed of 230 km/h. The car offers great economical value when it comes to fuel consumption too – a modest 7 litres of fuel for every 100 km – making it ideal for long-distance journeys and your daily commute.

Similar to its S90 T8 Twin Engine predecessor, the new S90 T5 comes with a 19-inch tyre profile, but with a few noticeable upgrades; the 255/40 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres feature five-triple spoke matte tech black diamond cut alloys. On the outside, the S90 T5 sports new vertical front grilles, in addition to round end-pipes with chrome sleeves. You’ll be spoilt for colour options too. The S90 T5 is available in the six exterior colours of bright silver, crystal white, luminous sand, maple brown, mussel blue and onyx black.

The S90 T5 comes with the complete package of active safety and driver-assist systems, so that you can drive with a peace of mind. A few of the S90 T5’s safety features that caught our attention include the city safety mode (which offers pedestrian, cyclist and large animal detection), as well as run-off road mitigation with road edge detection and BLIS (blind spot information system) with steer assist. The S90 T5 offers superb control, even when you’re cruising at higher speeds on the highway. Pilot assist (an advanced semi-autonomous drive feature) collects steering data and ensures that the vehicle is aligned within the road’s lane markings – even up to speeds of 130 km/h.

The S90 T5’s innovative and luxurious features extend to the car’s interiors too. For starters, the ergonomic seats are decked out with black leather upholstery and the car comes with dual-zone climate control, so you’re ensured of comfort on your commute. The S90 T5 doesn’t disappoint when it comes to entertainment either; there’s an intuitive Sensus Connect infotainment system with a nine-inch touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch Adaptive Digital Display instrument panel.
