Fulfilling its pledge on reducing carbon emissions per car by 40%, Volvo Car Malaysia has launched the XC40 Recharge T5 R-Design, becoming the first automotive brand in Malaysia to introduce a full plug-in hybrid electric vehicle range. Built on Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, the car is fully assembled in Malaysia.

Equipped with Volvo’s first-ever 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine Drive-E powertrain, with an electric motor mounted to its seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, driver can easily switch between the electric mode — delivering a maximum of 82hp and 160 Nm of torque — and the gasoline mode — providing full 180hp and 265Nm of torque while keeping its CO2 emission to a minimum of 50 grams per kilometre.
Made for the tech-savvy city dwellers, the hybrid car features a slew of modern safety systems such as Pilot Assist system, City Safety, Run-off Road protection and mitigation and Cross Traffic alert with brake support.
While boasting groundbreaking specifications, the sustainable car is designed with the brand’s iconic Scandinavian influence, being an elegant yet stylish looker perfect for driving in the city. Complete with its signature R-Design trim, the car is decorated with high gloss black grill, C-pillar moulding with updated “Recharge” and “Recharge” emblem at the rear.
Priced at around RM241k after sales tax exemption (on-the-road, without insurance), the XC40 Recharge T5 R-Design is available for viewing at all authorised Volvo dealers nationwide and comes in five colour options including Blackstone, Crystal White Pearl, Bursting Blue Metallic, Glacier Silver Metallic and Coral Red Metallic.
