Cartier Opens Their Exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria

Cartier’s latest exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria explores how the French maison became one of the most influential names in luxury.

For nearly two centuries, Cartier has sat at the intersection of royalty, celebrity, and design history. Now, Melbourne is playing host to one of the most comprehensive explorations of the maison ever assembled.

Opening at the National Gallery of Victoria and running until 4 October 2026, Cartier brings together nearly 400 extraordinary jewels, watches, precious objects, and archival materials, making it the largest exhibition dedicated to the French luxury house ever staged in Australia. Direct from London’s Victoria & Albert Museum and expanded exclusively for Melbourne, the exhibition features almost 300 never before seen pieces in the country.

The exhibition traces how Cartier evolved from a Parisian family business into one of the most recognisable luxury houses in the world. Visitors are taken through the story of Louis, Pierre, and Jacques Cartier, the three brothers whose global ambitions transformed the maison at the turn of the twentieth century. Their vision established Cartier across Paris, London, and New York, creating what would become the world’s first internationally recognised jewellery maison.

Alongside legendary creations from the Cartier Collection and the Victoria & Albert Museum are pieces once owned and worn by some of the most influential figures of the last century. From Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly to Rihanna, Andy Warhol, Princess Margaret, and the Duchess of Windsor, the exhibition highlights how Cartier’s creations have consistently found themselves at the centre of culture, power, and celebrity.

One of the exhibition’s defining themes is Cartier’s ability to balance innovation with timelessness. Early influences ranging from ancient Egyptian motifs to the maison’s signature Garland Style reveal how Cartier developed a visual language that remains instantly recognisable today. The exhibition also shines a spotlight on Jeanne Toussaint, Cartier Paris’s influential Creative Director from 1933 to 1970, whose bold creative vision helped define some of the house’s most enduring designs.

For watch enthusiasts, there is plenty to linger over. The exhibition explores Cartier’s technical innovations through iconic timepieces including the Santos, Tank, and Crash, demonstrating how the maison’s influence extends far beyond jewellery and into the broader history of design.

Visitors can also examine some of the world’s most remarkable gemstones, sourced through Cartier’s extensive global networks and relationships with royalty, collectors, and elite clients. Rare archival sketches, photographs, and design drawings offer a glimpse into the creative process behind the maison’s most celebrated works.

The exhibition concludes with one of its most spectacular moments: a display of 24 tiaras, bringing together pieces that embody Cartier’s enduring relationship with aristocracy, ceremony, and glamour.

What makes Cartier particularly compelling is that it is not simply a retrospective of beautiful objects. It is a look at how a luxury house became embedded in the visual history of the last 180 years, influencing everyone from maharajas and monarchs to Hollywood stars and contemporary musicians. Whether you are interested in jewellery, fashion, watches, or design history, this is a rare opportunity to see the evolution of a cultural icon under one roof.
