In the final days of Ramadan, attention slowly turns to Eid or Raya. Outfits for the first day are decided, oud fragrances resurface from the back of the shelf, and plans for the first round of open houses begin to take shape.
The essentials rarely change. Something appropriate for the mosque. Something presentable for visiting relatives. Footwear that ideally survives being left outside. Still, style has a way of evolving around tradition. Different fabrics, new silhouettes, the occasional unexpected accessory. The outline stays the same. The details shift.
Which is how we arrived at a small hypothetical. If UK drill rapper Central Cee ever found himself celebrating Raya in Malaysia, chances are someone would probably introduce him as our brother Akhil. Not an unusual name here. Akil, Aqil, Aqeil. Someone’s cousin, someone’s classmate, someone who probably played futsal on Friday nights.
Naturally, the next question presents itself. If our brother Akhil were getting dressed for the first day of Raya, somewhere between Eid prayers and the first open house of the day, what exactly would he wear?
