Malaysian music fans know a particular kind of heartbreak all too well.
An artist drops a world tour poster, and the first thing you do is zoom in, scan the dates and look for Kuala Lumpur. If it is not there, you brace yourself for another trip to Singapore or Bangkok. If it is, you screenshot the date, drop it in the group chat and immediately start looking up the venue, seating plan and how to get there without completely losing your mind.
For years, we have become so used to international tours skipping Malaysia that it almost feels personal. While there are practical reasons like entertainment taxes and venue limitations, permit requirements and content guidelines governing international performances — watching other cities get their moment time and time again still leaves us wondering: when is it finally our turn?
Of course, getting the tickets is a whole other battle. Gone are the days of queuing outside ticket outlets or calling radio stations for a chance to get through the door. Now, it is early mornings at your laptop, refreshing ticketing portals and praying your payment goes through before the queue crashes and sends you back to the homepage.
And when an artist skips Malaysia but stops in neighbouring countries, crossing borders becomes second nature. We book flights, navigate foreign ticketing sites and spend more than we probably should for a two-hour set. At some point, you stop asking whether it is practical and start figuring out how to make it happen.
But lately, something seems to be shifting.
Kuala Lumpur has been welcoming more international acts across genres, giving local fans more opportunities to see their favourites live. The year’s lineup so far has pulled massive crowds, showing a level of turnout that was impossible to ignore. For upcoming shows, demand has been so high that it’s almost expected for organisers to add second dates — most notably for global powerhouses like The Weeknd, BTS, My Chemical Romance and BIGBANG’s concert set for January 2027.
After years of #FOMO or travelling elsewhere for these experiences, we are finally getting more of them on our own turf. So, could the ‘Skip Malaysia’ curse finally be losing its grip? It’s too early to say, but with more international acts making their way here, we can hope Kuala Lumpur becomes less of an afterthought and more of a regular stop on world tour maps.
And when they do come, let us give them plenty of reasons to return.
