Montblanc’s 100 Years of Leather: To Write Is To Connect

Words have meaning, and Montblanc wants you to cherish the way you communicate with writing instruments and leather goods that stand the test of time.

Do you find a handwritten document to be more precious than an email? Through its creation of fine writing instruments and leather goods that protect them, Montblanc champions this idea that to write is to connect. After celebrating 100 years with the Meisterstück pen, the German penmaker expanded into crafting leather goods as a result of changing consumer demands. Writing instruments were no longer confined to a table, and they started to accompany travellers across raging seas and rough terrains — each stroke is an account of their escapades.

First came the pen pouches, then eventually came notebooks, briefcases, and the most emblematic of all, the modern Writing Traveler briefcase that embodies Montblanc’s values of craftsmanship and the art of writing. The most recognisable feature of the bag is its large front pocket, which includes dedicated compartments for pens, a notebook, a watch, and small leather goods. When fully unzipped, the bag resembles a mini desk that keeps essentials within reach. From concept to physical product, the briefcase evolved from sketches and 3D models, to wooden molds before being assembled over eight hours. This bag encapsulates the artisanal excellence of Montblanc that aims to enrich the wearer’s life, accumulated over the past century.

As seen across archival and newly designed pieces under the helm of Marco Tomasetta, it becomes clear that the choice of leathers — each considered for their suppleness, grain, and durability — all play equal roles in driving form and function. Rather than being treated with heavy finishes to mask original traces of the hide, the pieces embrace them instead, inviting patina with use. When presented next to each other, the contemporary pieces do not look out of place, signalling Montblanc’s consistency in proportion, utility, and craftsmanship. It takes more than just the emblem to call it a Montblanc piece.

Writing with pen and paper has become more of a novelty in this day and age. Montblanc does not intend to alter behaviour, but instead invites users to communicate with intention. Rather than having the ease of mind and convenience to backspace and “Delete” when a typo is spotted,  you first have to consider what you want to express. And if you don’t take care of your instruments with proper storage, you then lose the ability to communicate. Intention, too, comes in the form of having compact, well-designed leather goods that carry just enough — as excessive baggage, both mentally and physically, will bog anyone down.

Evident from the brand’s catalogues, ads, and roster of personalities — as seen at the 100 Years of Leather Goods celebration at NYFW — you can easily gauge that Montblanc’s approach to excellence is less about defining luxury through making flashy impressions alone. It requires real finesse and a true dedication to the craft. Just as each individual has a unique handwriting, the way they store, carry, and protect their writing instruments and personal belongings will also look different depending on how they use them. Most importantly, the leather goods display the traces of time. In a time of constant distraction that claws at our attention, Montblanc encourages you to consider that words have meaning, and that life is too short to carry whatever’s unnecessary.
