KENZO SS27: Opposites Are Finding Common Ground

This season, Nigo continues his exploration of duality, striking a balance between functionality, refinement and playfulness.

By Alaisha Bornina

When creative director Nigo unveiled his Pre-Spring 27 collection, he delivered a cohesive vision that fused workwear and casualwear into one refined aesthetic. The inspiration came to the designer after discovering an archival “Kenzo Work & Play” label, which he then used as a guiding framework to craft a collection that skillfully balanced utilitarian influences, casual staples, and softly structured tailoring.

For Spring Summer 27, Nigo expands on this dialogue between functionality and ease, but instead of a quiet reinterpretation of on-and-off-duty, the designer went with a more obvious approach — pairing playful, polished, and practical elements that usually won’t go well together but somehow, still do.

A lace slip dress underneath an oversized raincoat, a tailored blazer paired with denim trousers, and a rugby shirt that becomes a floor-length dress — call it quirky, but isn’t it exactly how people are? Nobody is one-dimensional, so the contrast and contradictions are what make them interesting.

The footwear plays into this theme of opposites. Nigo partnered with French shoemaker Paraboot to reinterpret the classic Michael, blending utilitarian workwear elements with refined lettering, while hybrid ballet boots adorned with delicate bows and floral accents add a soft edge. In collaboration with Converse, KENZO introduces reimagined versions of the Chuck 70 and low-top Jack Purcell, infused with varsity codes and subtle bonsai motifs.

In an era where personal style is heavily shaped by algorithms, individuality is often replaced by influence, creating a fashion landscape that feels less personal, more borrowed as it is driven by what performs online — à la the micro trend final boss phenomenon.

Yet, the collection is less concerned on whether the unlikely combinations appear performative, instead highlighting the freedom they create. Each contrast feels at ease, revealing how opposing ideas can coexist without cancelling each other out. By not choosing one concept over the other, the collection embraces their coexistence, reflecting the conflicting identities of a generation still finding its footing.
